With a Little Scottish Folklore Along the Way 💜✨
Scotland has always held a quiet, enduring magic in its hills, glens, and misty shores. Our ancestors turned to the land not only for food but for healing and spirit—drawing wisdom from the herbs, roots, and flowers that flourished through the turning of the seasons. Herbal teas are more than comfort in a cup; they are a continuation of that ancient practice, a way to stay connected to nature’s rhythm and sip from the folklore of the earth.
At The Thistle Witch, each blend is inspired by these traditions—modern potions crafted with care, guided by history, and laced with everyday magic. Let’s wander through the seasons together and explore the herbal allies that have long been treasured in Scottish lore.
🌱 Spring – Renewal & Awakening
Spring is the season of beginnings, when the land shakes off its long sleep and green life pushes through the soil once more. Traditionally, this was a time for cleansing the body and spirit, often with nettle, dandelion, and mint.
In Scottish folklore, nettles were thought to protect against evil spirits, their sting a fiery barrier of defense. Yet in the cup, nettle becomes gentle and nourishing, offering strength and vitality after the lean winter months. Mint, too, was gathered fresh to cool, calm, and awaken the senses.
✨ Teas to try in spring:
New Moon Reset – nettle, lemon balm, mint & hibiscus to refresh, renew, and set intentions.
Ash & Apple – with sage and nettle for grounding and ancestral connection, perfect for quiet reflection in new beginnings.
☀️ Summer – Vitality & Celebration
As the days grow long, herbs and flowers bloom in abundance. This is a season of celebration, fertility, and fire festivals like Beltane and Litha, when communities once gathered to light bonfires and honour the sun’s strength.
Chamomile and elderflowers were often harvested in summer, not only for their soothing qualities but also for their protective folklore. Chamomile was placed in charms to attract abundance, while elder carried blessings and was never cut without offering thanks to the Elder Mother spirit.
✨ Teas to try in summer:
Mama Bloom – hibiscus, apple, rosehip, lemongrass, and rose petals, a fruity celebration of warmth and vitality. (Coming to the website soon).
Moonchild Dream – lavender, linden flower, chamomile, and apple, a soft evening brew to cool down after long sunlit days.
🍂 Autumn – Reflection & Harvest
Autumn is the season of gathering, storing, and preparing for the darker months ahead. It is a time of gratitude, reflection, and ancestral honour. Herbs like sage and rosemary were burned or brewed for purification, while berries and roots provided sustenance and strength.
In Scottish folklore, rowan berries were tied above doorways to ward off misfortune, while brambles (blackberries) were gathered not only for food but for their deep healing properties. This season reminds us of the balance between light and dark, life and death.
✨ Teas to try in autumn:
Bonfire & Bramble – rooibos, cinnamon, rosehip, and elderberry, a warming cup that feels like fireside gatherings.
Broomstick biscuit – black tea, cinnamon, cocoa, and star anise, evoking the spiced sweetness of autumn nights.
❄️ Winter – Rest & Intuition
Winter is a season of stillness, when the land rests and we, too, are called to slow down. In the past, Scots relied on stored herbs and roots to ward off illness and bring comfort to long nights. Valerian root, mugwort, and lavender became powerful allies for sleep, divination, and dreamwork.
Mugwort, in particular, holds a long tradition in Celtic and Scottish folklore as a visionary herb. It was said to guide travellers on their journeys and protect them from wandering spirits. In tea, it helps open intuition and soothe restless minds.
✨ Teas to try in winter:
Full Moon Flow – chamomile, rose, lavender, and mugwort, a soothing ritual blend for release and rest.
Waning Bloom – valerian, ashwagandha, oatstraw, and lemon, a grounding tea for stillness and deep calm.
